The Challenge Akşam is one of Turkey’s largest newspaper groups with a daily nationwide circulation of more than 200,000 copies. Akşam’s media group also includes 4 newspapers, 16 magazines, 2 TV networks, 2 radio stations and Digiturk Turkey’s largest digital platform with more than 1 million subscribers.   In early 2006, Akşam was looking for expanding its public reach and broadening its audience by using a non conventional media type. The company was also willing to use a brand new technology in this project which would fit its public image. Pozitron already had the idea of developing a mobile version of the newspaper.

The offer of Pozitron in this case was to fit the newspaper into a mobile handset device and integrate itself to its audience’s daily life. This mutual demand led both companies to start a “Mobile journal”* project. Our challenge was to meet the quality standards of a well known media group and to be able to offer a dynamic, rich media content, easy to use and frequently updated.

 

Our Approach

Already the only certified mobile technology developer in the market, Pozitron proposed Akşam group, a brand new mobile technology for this project. This new mobile application offered richer content and more information than any other mobile news application type (SMS and Wap). This Java TM based application brought dynamic visual content and GPRS compatibility to Mobile Akşam. Thanks to Java technology, Mobile Akşam had endless features such as graphic newspaper headlines, interactive market data, currencies and stock exchange charts, smart News ticker functions etc…

Mobile Akşam overcame all the challenges and high standards set by the media group. This application worked in every MIDP 2.0 Java compatible phone in the market which represents about 15 million handset devices in Turkey. Moreover, about 90% of the current technology handset devices sold in the Turkish market is now JAVA friendly.

Pozitron’s professional and innovative approach in this project was to develop a better quality, stylish and a user-friendly application which would reflect and improve the media group’s public image.

 

The Result and Benefits

 

Mobile Akşam project was developed in a very short period of time, in less than 75 days. Pozitron’s young and talented team of engineers managed to create a ground breaking application which was globally first in its field.

 

Despite its original structure, Mobile Akşam is also compatible with Akşam group’s online XML infrastructure. Its 150 KB jar size makes Mobile Akşam easy to download and run. Including a state of art advertisement module, it is also possible to show ads on Mobile Akşam.

Mobile Akşam is digitally signed (Java Verified) and eligible to use the Java TM powered logo, it works in any phone supporting Java (MIDP 2.0).

 

Application was approved by the Akşam group and will be launched with a large media campaign in the second half of 2006.
